Most frequently asked questions:

“What’s in ITIL 4?"

ITIL 4 retains the best of ITIL v3/2011, and the core elements remain intact. The new content allows modern and emerging practices (Agile, Lean, DevOps) to be discussed alongside best practices. We have loads of resources on our ALL THINGS ITIL page.

After I complete ITIL 4 Foundation Training, what's next?" Read our ITIL Cheat Sheet: Which class is right for me?

The advanced classes are: Create, Deliver and Support (CDS), Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV), Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI), High Velocity IT (HVIT) and Digital and IT Strategy (DITS). In 2023, onboarded the first ITIL Practice Manager course Monitor, Support & Fulfil (MSF). In 2024, we onboarded a single day Practice Manager course, Change Enablement and have Sustainability in Digital and IT (SDIT) on the development calendar.

“What does the ITIL 4 certification path look like?”

See diagram below, or refer to the Breakdown Documents on our ALL THINGS ITIL page.

“Is there still an ITIL ‘library’?”

Yes. Although ITIL no longer stands for ‘IT Infrastructure Library’, there is still a library. The ITIL 4 core publications align with the ITIL 4 qualification scheme. For each ITIL certification course, there is a publication (e.g., Create, Deliver and Support, High-velocity IT, etc.). Each course covers only a subset of what is included in the publication, but the entire publication is provided with the course. Each course also introduces a subset of information about a select set of ITIL practices. A major change in ITIL 4 is that the practices have been decoupled from set publications. Instead, the ITIL ‘library’ also includes the ITIL 4 practices guides which are available as part of the PeopleCert subscription service.

"What is PeopleCert Membership (formerly MyAxelos)?"

This subscription service is designed to support you on your learning journey, with industry news, best practice insights, articles, exam preparation materials and webinars from subject-matter experts. You can also use this service to log Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program, a requirement for ITIL 4 certifications.

As a part of PeopleCert's CPD program, subscribers can earn and submit points towards acquiring and maintaining their digital badges related to qualifications such as ITIL and PRINCE2.

"How do I submit Axelos/PeopleCert CPD points?"

Candidates with select PeopleCert Global Best Practice certifications can choose to renew within three years of their original certification dates by logging CPD points in the PeopleCert Membership. We break it down in our CPD Program Overview.

“I am certified in ITIL v3, so what do I do?”

Of course, the time and money you’ve invested in your ITIL knowledge is still very meaningful and worthwhile. We believe in life-long education and so if you are currently ITIL v3 certified, we encourage you to explore the new ways of thinking and working introduced in ITIL 4.

The ITIL 4 Scheme - Take a deeper dive - read our Breakdown Documents on our ALL THINGS ITIL page

ITIL 4 Managing Professional (MP) (middle column in the image below) targets IT practitioners working within technology and digital teams across businesses. The Managing Professional (MP) stream provides practical and technical knowledge about how to run successful IT enabled services, teams and workflows.

ITIL 4 Strategic Leader (SL) (column on the right in the image below) recognizes the value of ITIL 4, not just for IT operations, but for all digitally-enabled services. Becoming an ITIL SL demonstrates that the individual has clear understanding of how IT influences and directs business strategy. To obtain the designation ITIL 4 MP or ITIL 4 SL, the candidate must complete all modules in each stream, with ITIL 4 Strategist being a universal module for both streams.

ITIL 4 Practice certifications (column on the left in the image below) ITIL practice-based modules, based on the practice guides, are being rolled out by PeopleCert starting Q2 2023. Five Practices are bundled and combined in 3-day training with practical assignments built in that enable application of what is being learned using real-life work scenarios. These courses also provide guidance on the ITIL 4 maturity model.

To achieve the ITIL Master designation, you will need to complete the ITIL Practice Manager, Managing Professional and the Strategic Leader designation.
